Industrial Cooling Tower

Water savings in a 500 Ton cooling tower

A 500 ton cooling tower in North Carolina was using 4,587,900 gallons annually. The water was chemically treated to prevent scaling.

After the installation of the non invasive electronic product to prevent scaling without the use of chemicals the water consumption was reduced to 2,086,400 the next year. This is a savings of roughly 50 %.

At a price of water/sewage of $0.007/gallon this represents a total saving of $17,510 each year. By setting the TDS controller to a set point of 1800 PPM instead of 1600 PPM the savings became even more.

The approach temperature in the chiller condenser is now running at 3.5 -3.8 degrees which is the same when the cooling system was installed, indicating the absence of scale build-up.

The system uses electric and magnetic fields to promote crystal growth in the bulk of the water. Crystals do not have a surface charge and will therefore not adhere to pipe walls or other surfaces. They float with the water until discharged by regular blow down. As chemical scale inhibitors increase the electrical conductivity (EC) of the cooling water very quickly, blow down starts as soon as the set point of the EC level is reached in an automated blow down system. By not using these chemicals it will take longer before the set point is reached and that is where the savings come from. In addition the set point can be set at a higher level, generating even more savings.

In my opinion it should be compulsory (enforced by law) to install this kind of scale preventing devices making it possible to use less or no chemicals. Total water savings in the United States will be beyond imagination.

Washers & Heating Elements

It isn’t very often you come across a product that actually does everything that it claims to. After fighting with scale and other contributing factors causing heaters to prematurely fail and exceptionally long periods of downtime for cleaning, I was able to sell the idea of this new technology to my manager.

I researched the product and the theory was sound, but how about in practical application. Within 3 weeks after installing the unit I was able to knock scale buildup off of one of our parts washers with my finger. This may seem insignificant until you realize that prior to this a pressure washer and putty knife wouldn’t put a dent in it. Since we began using this unit we have not replaced a single heating element compared with at least 3-4 heaters
every 2 months. It has also helped us maintain a 60% duty cycle on our heaters compared to an 85%-90% duty cycle prior to using this unit.

Being from the Midwest we know about water with high calcium and lime content. I am considering buying one for my home.

Thanks for the great product.
